Ah, family photos. Some people love posing for them, some people hate it, but the fact is they really should be taken from time to time because such snaps really are a fantastic way to preserve precious memories (which is why you should consider doing more with your best snaps than uploading them to Facebook or Instagram, they are meant to be saved for posterity)
The ideal family photo is one that captures the occasion beautifully and tastefully. However, often that is not quite the way things work out, as this collection of rather awkward family photos demonstrates all too well.
Every new family begins with a happy couple. And many happy couples celebrate a joyous occasion like their engagement with a photo session, either formal or informal. Some of these shots are better than others though:
1. Artistic Visions Gone Bad
Apparently this ambitious wedding photographer had intended to capture one of those very arty, windswept ocean shots. In theory that sounds like a lovely idea, given that Mother Nature has provided a gorgeous backdrop. As you can see though that is not quite what happened and what the happy couple ended up with were some comedy shots that may at least amuse their future children in years to come.
2. Not Quite Ready for Their Close Up
Many people do feel that their pets are part of the family, with some going as far as refereeing to them as their ‘fur kids.’ This newly engaged couple certainly felt that way and thought including their two adorable felines in their engagement photos would be a great idea.
The cats did not apparently agree. One looks half scared to death and the other seems to be plotting some terrible revenge for the indignity to be excited at a later date. Scary.
3. The Dog Who Disapproved
Some wedding photographers, in their attempts to be creative, do come up with the strangest ideas. Here it seems that the happy couple in this engagement shoot were supposed to take a back seat while their pooch took center stage. Which is fine, but shouldn’t they be slightly concerned about just how disapproving he looks about their display of affection?
4. Not Everyone’s a Romantic ..
What a guy. He obviously worked rather hard to both set up this lovely outdoor proposal and ensure that someone was around to document what is sure to become a very precious memory for the couple for years to come.
Shame the photographer was not very observant though. Not everyone is a romantic and obviously this photobombing pooch is one of those less emotional soul. He ruined the whole thing, although fortunately, the poor couple seems totally oblivious and the sweet proposal appears to have gone well.
5. The Strangest Engagement Shoot Ever?
And finally, this critter was certainly not supposed to be a part of the photo shoot, it’s in no way staged and it’s fair to say that he (or she?) really put a damper on the whole thing. However our biggest question is quite simple; why on Earth did the photographer keep shooting when everything had gone so horribly wrong?
Awkward Wedding Photos
After the joy of the engagement comes the marriage of course. And that is when the family photos can easily get even weirder:
6. We Shall not be Moved
This is such a lovely and charming family group photo. Or it would have been if only those sunbathers had agreed to get out of the way. According to the photographer who took the shot this was an attempt to shame the sun worshippers into getting up for a minute to let the photoshoot proceed but apparently even that didn’t work and it was the wedding party who oved on, not the lounging spoilsports.
7. Falling Down on the Job
A chief bridesmaid has a lot of important duties, both before and on the day of the wedding. And while we are sure this young lady started off with the best of intentions she seems to have fallen down on the job, literally. Fortunately the happy couple seem not to have noticed at all, which actually, when you think about it, seems pretty cold…
8. Never Work with Animals…and Bridegrooms
According to the Australian wedding photographer who posted this picture on Reddit, he did warn this couple that the bull who had wandered into the shot might be aggressive. They however thought it would make a cool photo to add to their album. It didn’t. A few minutes later the bull charged, knocked down the groom and fled the scene. Fortunately everyone was OK, if a little shaken up and the bull never did come back for a piece of cake…
9. Imitation is Not Always the Sincerest Form of Flattery
It’s a rather novel idea, having a wedding cake that’s a replica of the blushing bride (if a little egotistical) And, perhaps, in the hands of a master baker the execution would actually be rather impressive. That does not, sadly, seem to be who baked this one. In fact, we’re fairly sure that this bride was not at all happy with this edible replica of herself, but she’s just been trying hard (and failing) not to show it.
Awkward Family Group Shots
Families are great. Spending time with your family is (sometimes) great. Family photos make for great lasting memories, mementos that can be passed on to later generations. However, in the case of these decidedly awkward family group shots that may not be such a good idea after all:
Matching outfits. Are they ever cool? Perhaps someone, somewhere can pull them off but as these family photos demonstrate, it’s very, very hard to do.
11. Luscious in Leopardskin?
Leopardskin has been at the edges of the fashion scene for decades. It’s a risky choice though, as it does tend to be considered a little tacky by many. So Mom choosing a fetching little leopardskin number is a possible fashion faux pas, but dressing her entire crew in matching animal print? It’s a bold decision that’s for sure, just not one that we (or most people with half an ounce of taste) would actually make.
12. Hawaiian Horror Show
Hawaiian shirts are another fashion no-no in most people’s books, although Magnum PI did get away with them for years. In fact we think is who mustachioed Dad may have been trying to emulate. However, did he really have to drag the whole family into the cosplay? This is just too much for anyone’s tastes and we don’t think even Tom Sellick would approve.
13. Giving Denim on Denim a Whole New Meaning..
Ask any fashion expert and they’ll tell you that denim on denim is – and always has been a terrible fashion choice. We mean it’s been fifteen years and Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake still haven’t lived down those matchy matchy red carpet denim outfits they wore to the 2001 MTV Music Awards. This family photo however takes denim on denim to a rather horrible new level..
14. DIY Disaster
There is absolutely nothing wrong with making your own clothes. In fact we totally admire those who have the skill to outfit themselves and their family by their own hand. However, we do wonder why this family chose to apparently use the living room curtains and a couple of tablecloths to create these matching duds. Did they just not need them anymore?
Every parent thinks that their kid is adorable and the professional photography session to showcase all of that cuteness is still a must for many proud parents, even in the age of the Facebook snap. As these next few photos demonstrate though sometimes even a pro can’t quite get things right when asked to work with unpredictable children..
15. Exorcist in Training?
It’s great when little kids have future career ambitions early in life. Well, most of the time anyway. Based on this shot we’re guessing this young man has designs on a less than usual career as an exorcist, but should he really be practicing on the baby?
16. Bad Santa
Santa Claus is a figure of joy and wonder in most young children’s lives. However, because this particular Santa seems to enjoy a bit of mischief we’re guessing that this little girl is about to develop a lifelong fear of him in 3..2..1..
17. Sibling Smackdown
The idea behind this action shot was apparently to capture these two teenage siblings in a well-timed jump for joy. Someone’s timing however was way off, and the results were rather painful for this poor girl. Her brother, on the other hand, looks a little too pleased with what he did, leading us to suspect that this may have not quite been an accident after all..
18. Sniffing Out the Black Sheep
There is always that one member of the family who just does not quite fit. The black sheep as many would term them. Well apparently this Old English Shepard thought he had this family’s black sheep sniffed out and took it upon himself to (rather roughly) escort him out of the picture.
19. Nobody Loves Santa
A family shot with Santa. How cute an idea is that? Well this Mom thought so anyway, even though it seems like the rest of her family didn’t agree. In fact even Santa is obviously completely over this photo session and can’t wait to move on.
20. The Perfect Family Photo?
We absolutely love this photo. We’re assuming the idea was to get all the kids together and get them to ‘act natural’. And boy, did they deliver..
10. Kids Do the Most Adorable Things?
Little kids at weddings are so cute right? Small girls in frilly flower girl dresses, cute little boys in miniature morning suits. What bride wouldn’t want a couple of these adorable little rug rats in her wedding party? Well, maybe this one might have had second thoughts after this shot, but at least he did miss the bridesmaid’s dress.
